Living with intention

I saw a blog today, it said “celebrate your gifts and embrace your intentions.
I read a Facebook status update today: Let´s live this life with intention.
I saw a blog post today: Resolve to let go of the past

all of these spoke to me. I liked the idea of living with intention. But what does it mean exactly?
I looked it up on Wikipedia:

Intentional living is any lifestyle based on an individual or group’s conscious attempts to live according to their values and beliefs. These can include lifestyles based on religious or ethical values, as well as coaching, personal transformation, and leadership training.

Intentional living requires one to be aware of their fundamental beliefs and to be willing to make an effort to have their behavior reflect these beliefs in a form of integrity in relation to his or her conscience and environment. In some cases, such changes are drastic enough that like-minded individuals group together in intentional communities.

Some examples of intentional living include co-housing, ethical living, frugal living, moral community, simple living, sustainable living, vegetarianism as well as many religious lifestyles.

While not necessarily representing distinct or actual lifestyles, many themes and areas of human interest, activity, and study exist that contribute to intentional living. Examples include appropriate technology, conservation, ecology, environmentalism, humanism, humanitarianism, and socially responsible investing.

wow, that is quite something. to live intentionally means we have to know our values, and our goals. We have to be able to define what is important to us and to choose intentionally to do those things that are in line with the values and goals we have. We cannot just drift along letting life decide what happens to us. We should not get so wound up in the day to day business of making a living, that we loose track of what our goals and values are.

It is easier said than done I think. It is more than just hitting like on a facebook page or a blog post.

To return to the letting go blog post, it means also we have to let go of the past. If the past is no longer serving our present or the future, then we have to let it go. And what does this mean too? It means letting go of negative relationships, it means moving on from jobs that stress us out and are our of kilter with our values, it means facing up to health issues that we may have been ignoring. It means reassessing where we are, where we want to be, and then seeing how what we do each day is going to lead us there.

so in a nutshell

To live with intention is to know what you want and what you value.

To live with intention is to do things that help achieve your goals.

To live with intention means to avoid doing things that are out of line with your goals or values.

To live with intention is to align your thoughts, words and deeds with your desires and your values.

To live with intention means you are taking responsibility for your own life, your own dreams, your own happiness.

I also found this great, and apparently famous quote by Mary Anne Radmacher.

living with intention

there is a lot in this quote, and again, it is easy to like, but we need to understand it in order to really live with intention. There is a lot in it. I love the part “choose with no regret”. We can only do this if we are know what we want.
